The Black Imagination: Science Fiction, Futurism and the Speculative

Afro-futurist fiction has come into its own, and this book covers not only speculative fiction, but its presence in comic books, poetry, and cinema, including blockbuster films. The perspectives of women's studies, queer studies, and even an eco-feminist approach are also incorporated. Almost all of the contributors come from academia. The editors, Jackson (women and gender studies, DePaul U.) and Moody-Freeman (African and black diaspora studies, DePaul U.) have put together a scholarly work on a subject often dismissed as a casual preoccupation.
