International Public Relations and Public Diplomacy: Communication and Engagement

The 24 essays in this volume consider the relationship between international public relations and public diplomacy, contending that public diplomacy should be examined as a strategic management approach and should apply lessons from public relations literature. Communications, political science, media studies, and public relations scholars from the US, Europe, Israel, and Asia apply public relations functions like relationship management, crisis communication, advocacy, stewardship, and campaign evaluation to public diplomacy, and look at how governments, corporations, and nongovernmental organizations apply public relations tactics to build and maintain relationships with foreign publics. They also discuss relational and mediated public diplomacy and their integration; US public diplomacy since 9/11; nation brands and country reputation in the US and UK, the use of video news releases, and international broadcasting as information intervention; engaging domestic and foreign publics through contextual meaning, diaspora communities, and social media; and global issues and challenges, such as populism, leaders’ reputations, public diplomacy evaluation, social justice and diversity, and culture-centered approaches in global contexts.
