Assessing the Implicit Personality Through Conditional Reasoning

James (psychology and management, Georgia Institute of Technology) and LeBreton (psychological sciences, Purdue U.) introduce psychology researchers and practitioners to an indirect measurement system for assessing the unconscious or implicit personality designed to address the limitations of existing measures and show how the information obtained complements information on explicit personality aspects that individuals are aware of. They review the strengths and limitations of several common measures of implicit personality; the necessary features of a new system; the rationale for their system, conditional reasoning, and how it is designed; how to capture biases in framing, reasoning, and analysis; how to build conditional reasoning problems to develop and validate tests; validation efforts for their test, especially their Conditional Reasoning Test for Aggression; and how to develop tests to measure traits such as depression, addiction proneness, and toxic leadership.
