Meckchate! is a story for children. It is a story of chess, bullying and family. It takes place during the final week of the summer term of 1999 when the school’s chess tournament takes place. Rory (11) is a bully and a natural at chess. He knows he will win the trophy. Stewart (10) loves chess and is one of the top players in the tournament, but because of his speech affliction, and his size, Rory’s intimidation of Stewart escalates. During the week tensions rise especially when Rory falls for Stewart’s sister, Cleo (13), without realising who she is. This becomes a complex and confusing situation for all those involved leading to anger, tears, inner struggles, fear, and hate, all combining to give this story a realism of torment, solitude, family and love.
