Ron Bitto was born in Chicago, the second of 12 children. He received a scholarship to Harvard, where he earned an AB degree in English. He subsequently studied playwriting at the Yale School of Drama and has worked as a writer and marketing manager in Houston for many years. He and his wife Connie raised two sons.
