How does someone become a writer? WORDS WORK is both an anthology and an autobiography that traces the development of an award-winning author from her days as a high school journalist through a period of academic scholarship to her retirement days as an essayist and poet. The story of how Sally A. Kitt Chappell met the challenges along the way is illustrated by excerpts from her books, articles originally published in THE NEW YORK TIMES, and some early poems. Included are selections from ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING OF GRAHAM, ANDERSON, PROBST AND WHITE, (winner of the Association of American Publishers award for best book on architecture and urban planning of 1992), CAHOKIA: MIRROR OF THE COSMOS, CHICAGO'S URBAN NATURE: A Guide to the City's Landscape and Architecture, and BARRY BYRNE: ARCHITECTURE AND WRITINGS. Together here for the first time are five complete travel essays, "Rome Alfresco: Picnicking on the Seven Hills," "A Landscape Where Humor Is an Oasis," "On Being a Magnet to Hustlers," "Yes, Lauren, There Are Nice New Yorkers," and "Lament on the Streets of New Orleans." Born in Kansas, Sally A. Kitt Chappell attended Mills College for two years, and then Smith College. While professor of architectural history at DePaul University her book ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING OF GRAHAM, ANDERSON. PROBST AND WHITE won the Association of American Publishers award for best book on architecture and urban planning of 1992. Always interested in the interplay of landscape and culture, her ground-breaking book CAHOKIA: MIRROR OF THE COSMOS, was noted for its luminous prose recounting the history of a place from its beginnings in the Mound Builder period to its contemporary distinction as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2007 her CHICAGO’S URBAN NATURE: A GUIDE TO THE CITY’S ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE depicted over sixty places where architecture and landscape were conceived at the outset as a single whole. The results transformed Chicago from a metropolis to a cosmopolis. In addition, she has been a contributor to the Travel Section of THE NEW YORK TIMES. An anthology of her poetry appeared in SHARDS: SELECTED POEMS in 2011.
