In this textbook, educators from the UK provide nine chapters on special education in the early years in the UK and the provision and services for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), emphasizing partnership and the participation of children, parents, and multi-agency professionals, as well as an affirmative model of disability that views children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities as competent and valuable members of society. Chapters include theoretical concepts, examples through case studies, and discussion of the history of legislation and policy for services and provision for children with SEND, working with parents, responding to children’s voices in assessment and planning, inclusion, the role of the leader in advocating for inclusive practice, the role of professional ethics in partnership and collaboration, early intervention strategies and transition from the early years, continuing professional development for staff, and multi-agency working.
