Ecologies of Architecture: Essays on Territorialisation

Drawing on a range of philosophical texts, Andrej Radman brings together a collection of 11 of his essays, published over the last decade, to show that when a society manipulates its matter it is not a reflection of culture; it is culture. To speak of ecologies of architecture is to break with judgement for experience. As Gilles Deleuze put it in his book on Nietzsche, it is not about justification, ’but a different way of feeling: another sensibility’. If to think differently we have to feel differently, then the design of the built environment has no other purpose but to transform us. While engineering is solution-oriented, architecture stays with the problem so as to tease out a creative potential.

Andrej Radman is Assistant Professor of Architecture at Delft University of Technology. He is a licensed and award-winning architect and has contributed to numerous academic publications including Deleuze and Architecture (EUP, 2013). He is co-editor of Critical and Clinical Cartographies: Architecture, Robotics, Medicine, Philosophy (EUP, 2017).

Rosi Braidotti is Distinguished University Professor at Utrecht University. She holds honorary doctorates from Helsinki, 2007 and Linkoping, 2013; is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (FAHA), 2009; Member of the Academia Europaea (MAE), 2014; Knighthood in the order of the Netherlands Lion, 2005). Her publications include: Nomadic Subjects (2011), and Nomadic Theory (2011), Columbia University Press; The Posthuman 2013 and Posthuman Knowledge 2019, Polity Press; in 2016 she co-edited with Paul Gilroy: Conflicting Humanities and in 2018 with Maria Hlavajova: The Posthuman Glossary, both with Bloomsbury Academic.
