True Alaskan personal stories about life on the last frontier, and growing up on a homestead six miles from the nearest dirt road, where hunting and fishing was not only a sport but an absolute necessity.
Mel Adkins was born in Oklahoma in 1947 and moved with his parents to Anchor Point Alaska in the spring of 1960. On a 160 acre homestead, six miles from the nearest dirt road, he discovered the meaning of hard work before the chain saw made its appearence as a common garage tool. Fire wood was cut with axes and cross cut saws, and hauled to the wood shed by dog team. His spare time was spent fishing, hunting, and exploring the back woods of the area. He developed shooting accuracy, and hunting skills which stayed with him throught his adult life.
