I was born in Waverly, Iowa in the same hospital my two granddaughters were born. My sports activities included track, baseball, gymnastics, football and basketball. When not playing sports, studying or delivering newspapers at 4:00 AM I fished for bass in the Cedar River. After a serious running injury in 2000 that removed me from competitive racing, I turned my attention to long slow distance and ran my first marathon, The Adelaide Marathon, on 20 August 2001 the day before my 54th birthday, in 4:34. To date I have run 79 marathons and / or ultra marathons. As a hobby and to get in numerous shorter training runs, I pace marathons for FootWorks Miami, The San Diego Track Club and Marathon Pacing.
