This text explains an improvisational approach to choreography that can be used in different dance genres or forms. It describes aspects of improvisation; how to use the elements of space, time, energy, and shape; identifying choreographic form, including the dance phrase, the criteria of effective form, and how to use these techniques to shape a dance, as well as common dance forms and selecting subjects; and staging the performance, including auditions, rehearsal, accompaniment, lighting, and costumes. This edition has updated and new content to support and extend dance education standards in relation to the creative process, improvisation, and choreographic development; expanded movement explorations; updated technical aspects of producing a concert; and revised sections on developing skills, to align with the National Core Art Standards in Dance processes of creating, performing, responding, and connecting. Inspirations for movement discovery are now arranged by learning styles. Video clips are provided online. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
