This 14-chapter guide describes how to teach physical education to students with moderate to severe disabilities. Physical education practitioners and faculty from the US address understanding disabilities and Universal Design for Learning, collaborative teaming, assessment strategies, communication practices to enhance participation, promoting positive relationships between students with disabilities and their peers, using paraeducators, and creating accessible equipment, followed by details on the skills needed to teach students with disabilities, in relation to sensorimotor integration through functional analysis, disability sport, modified programming, transitioning to recreational opportunities beyond school, and aquatics. The last section outlines sample lessons using a Universal Design for Learning format, including team sports, target games, and lifetime and health-related activities like soccer, floor hockey, basketball, hurdles, golf, bowling, archery, horseshoes, tennis, and personal physical fitness plans.
