The peace and serenity of the 1867 English countryside is shattered when Colin Amesbury, and his twin sister Lady Christabel discover a grievously injured child sprawled in the dirt at the side of the road. The inescapable conclusion is horrifying. The child had been clawed, by a great beast.

Things become even more peculiar when a mysterious stranger, the very image of an ancient Viking warrior, arrives at their castle. Christabel is stunned to realize that this is the man whom she has been seeing in her dream-time for years, a man to whom she is inexplicably drawn. Destiny, he says, has called him there. Is he more than who - or what - he claims to be?

The mysterious man is haunted by horrifying visions of times to come. A great beast is indeed amongst them. A disaster, unparalleled in recent times, is soon to be visited upon them all. Driven by a need for vengeance, the beast has promised to slaughter every living thing that crosses its path.
