The sound of gunshots rings out on a sleepy small town street, but instead of running for cover, the people shout and wave. It's all in fun when the Native Americans and Illinois Militia do battle in Schuylerville Illinois, where the battle seems to have been going on for 150 years. But this year's celebration turns deadly when a stray bullet fells one of the men in blue. Steve Vogel, who had recently moved his young family back to his little hometown in search of a peaceful life, finds himself caught up in the intrigue when it is determined that the fatal bullet was fired from the gun he had loaned a friend. What first seemed a tragic accident becomes suspected murder when the hated between Vogel's friend, Gary, and the dead man surfaces. Vogel feels himself pulled into the murder investigation when he discovers that he himself holds the key to resolving an age-long dispute between the Native people and the first white settlers of the area, and solving the mystery of the "soldier's" death. Along the way, Vogel must confront his own unsettling past, and uncover a dark secret hidden in the woods beyond his small town home.
