All but three of the stories in this collection are set in San Francisco or San Francisco Bay Area. What I Wished For takes place in a Greyhound Bus Depot in Redding, California; Pescadero unfolds at Duarte's Tavern in the town of Pescadero, off State Highway One in San Mateo County. Petrov's Bluff opens in San Francisco and then goes bird watching in a mythical state park in Northern California. Author Webb Johnson wrote most of Emma's Gift at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore Coffee Shop. Makoto and Symbiosis came to him while hiking in the oak studded hills of the Borges Ranch in Walnut Creek Open Space. The Flight of the Bumblebee transpired from memories of 1950's rural Walnut Creek. The Pigeon Drop, Susan's Superhero, and Sam Ting's each unfold in San Francisco. While many of the settings are recognizable, most of the characters are fictional. Patrick O'Toole was a real person who lived in San Francisco. The story portrayed in The Little Fox recounts what might have happened had he lived on after a vicious mugging on Battery Street in 1964.
