A year after the Serbian paramilitary leader Arkan held her captive, U.N. spy Mai Fisher finds herself back in war-torn Yugoslavia.
This time she and her partner, Alexei Bukharin, are investigating sniper activity in Sarajevo. Despite her dread of returning to a place that had given her so much pain, she does her job gathering forensic data to prove to the world which side is responsible.
On a cold, late autumn morning, she finds herself at the spot where an unknown sniper killed a mother the day before. Mai feels the need for truth and for justice, not only for this mother but for what Mai lost the year before.
Then, it all goes horribly wrong--again. Mai still wants justice, but Alexei understands vengeance is often the better option in this part of the world.
