1960's, deep in the woods of the Ozarks, over 20 miles to the nearest school, the winding roads are too far out and rough for the school bus to take, too far for the kids to walk to school, so it appeared that the only option for this family was to homeschool. However, if its any consolation they live in a school bus but the only thing they had to use for school books were two worn bibles and five old paperback westerns. When Mama takes to her sickbed, 10 year old Sassy and her siblings, Earldean (11), Ed Earl (6), and baby sister Learline, age 2, set out on foot down these back roads to fetch their daddy to bring him home to help. A few adventurous days later they end up in in the small mountainside town of Whisper Ridge, where a host of colorful characters do their best to assist in ways of their own. It would help if these youngins knew their last name, but having never needed it before now, all they ever called their parents were mama n' daddy. In the process of all this, another burden now weighs on Sassy, who realizes she has been know all of her life by a nick-name. Now more than ever, she feels the need to know who she really is so that she too can be 'bona-fide'.
