Joe R. Warwick, Jr. was born in Scotland County, North Carolina and was the oldest of four children. He graduated from Wagram High School in 1958 in one of the largest graduating classes with 13 students. He graduated from Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton, North Carolina in 1960 and received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Biology from Appalachian State University in 1962. Joe married Jeanne Booe in July of 1962, and both started teaching careers that fall. Joe left teaching in May of 1964 to become physical director of the Gilvin Roth YMCA in Elkin, North Carolina. Shortly after moving to Elkin, their daughter Jamie Ann was born. Joe’s job with the Elkin YMCA started a 40-year love affair with the YMCA taking him to Ys in Florida including Sarasota, Venice, and Orlando; Augusta, Georgia; and finally to Greensboro, North Carolina where he spent 13 years as the president and CEO. Joe retired in 2005 and moved to Cooleemee, North Carolina to be close to daughter Jamie. Joe and Jeanne are loving their retirement and spend time traveling in their RV and working out at the Salisbury YMCA. Jeanne is very active with the Mocksville Senior Center teaching line dancing, and Joe enjoys playing cowboy with friends in Cowboy Action Shooting. Joe and Jeanne belong to New Hope Presbyterian Church.
