Ian Mayfield grew up in south London and south east England, and most of the action of his Special Crime Unit novels takes place on his old stamping grounds. Like many people, his introduction to crime fiction came through the works of the great female ’golden age’ authors: Dorothy L. Sayers, Agatha Christie, Margery Allingham and Ngaio Marsh. And he remembers being blown away when at a young and impressionable age he first discovered Sherlock Holmes. Among his major influences as a writer he counts Sayers, Ruth Rendell, John Harvey, William Marshall, Raymond Chandler and Charles Dickens. Now a resident of southern California, Ian enjoys the climate, the scenery and the craft beer but laments the impossibility of finding a decent meat pie.
