A young Inuit woman hunting the great white bear Nannuraluk makes her coming of age Trek across the High Arctic in the first millennium. In the summer of 1963, American student-archaeologists on Ellesmere Island, 500 miles from the North Pole, excavate artifacts of prehistoric Nannurmiut, People of the Bear. When they discover a record of the young woman’s Trek cut into animal skins, the students break away from their professor’s orderly dig site determined to follow her ancient trail. Making their own coming of age trek across Ellesmere’s unmapped rock plain, the students discover a beautiful but unforgiving land unchanged by a thousand years and still home to the apex predator Nannuraluk.
