Bogey's Spook is the third book in a trilogy starring the trainer Bogey Dawson and his wife Becky. In this book they encounter a powerful white colt they call Spook and find their destinies intertwined with a young jockey named Hank. Together they face a range of obstacles, finally a do or die showdown. Bogey Dawson and his wife Becky take in an orphaned teenager with high ambitions. The boy longs to be a jockey and believes he could excel. As he shows some progress, he is approached by a jockey's agent who tries to sign him to a contract. Bogey and Becky do not trust the agent, and Becky surprisingly decides to become an agent herself. She and Hank have success until Hank comes under the influence of a beautiful woman, Dot Phillips, with a sad story. Her mother is ill and she is in the clutches of a loan shark who threatens to cut off the funds essential to save her mother's life. Hank is enthralled and ready to help her until the loan shark asks him to deliberately lose a race on Spook. Hank is torn between his sympathy and affection for Dot and his love for Spook who has been a pet - almost a brother - to him. The unfolding of this heart-rending situation and its climatic outcome requires Bogey's greatest skills and tests his courage to the limits.
