The once famous writer William Highworth seems to have consumed in the eyes of the protagonist of this short tale. There is nothing left in him of the old braggart that triumphed among the literary circles of London. His enigmatic wife, the beautiful and ethereal Catherine, is the third side of this Gothic triangle.
