During his three combat tours, the author faced firsthand many of the depicted events in his book. Names have been fictionalized or modified to afford a measure of anonymity to the events depicted. As the story continues, Jack Payne, the fictional main character, had made a firm and resolute decision to remain in the Army, not that there was ever a chance or any other option to consider. He had faced the odds of survival in combat and really demonstrated innate combat skill during some of the most stressful and dangerous situations imaginable. His leadership skill was well above his grade and rank, but he knew that he would be tested again as the sophistication level of the enemy was changing. He recognized the need to innovate and fine-tune the use of helicopters and the combat innovation they brought to any situation.
