Native Foreigner describes Jamaican immigration experiences, the psychological impact on self-identity, well-being, and spirituality. Native Foreigner examines first-hand accounts of migration experiences and adjustments in three areas: acculturation, ethnic identity, and well-being. Jamaican migration experience is examined against the backdrop of the author’s own migration experiences. Despite the challenges of adjustment, Jamaican immigrants respond with resilience and hope as they adjust and flourish in a system that is not designed to facilitate their success. Family and church community continue to be effective sources of social support for Jamaican immigrants. Whether they belong to an organized religious body or simply practice a lifestyle that is guided by spiritual values, spirituality and social support are reported as strong factors in the development of resilience and adaptation among Jamaican immigrants. Native Foreigner includes a comparison of the migration experience with the Christian journey. The comparison offers hope and an optimistic perspective for the weary Christian traveler. The book concludes with a reflective visit to the author’s native country and a recommitment to living one’s best life even while facing the challenges. Dr. Gordon is Chair of the Department of Psychology and Counseling at Washington Adventist University. She is a dynamic speaker and an active member of various professional organizations.
