George G. Pinneo5/25/2018 George Pinneo grew up in NW Ohio, graduating from Case Institute of Technology with a B.S.Ch.E. in 1959. His technical career spans 55 years of manufacturing experience, including being a founder of a successful article surveillance startup in Hollywood Florida. With 7 US Patents to his name, he has demonstrated a love of doing what had never been done before. A recent trip took them into the Baltic region to the cities of the Hanse. Another trip took them through Andalusia in southern Spain where they stood on the top of the Rock, Gibraltar, and looked 8 miles south across the Straight to the mountains of Morocco rising on the North African coast. The family lives up on the Mogollon Rim of Arizona near the White Mountains. He earned a private pilot’s license and built an ’experimental homebuilt’ airplane, which he has spent 20 years "refining". He has twice flown cross-country to the annual EAA fly-in in Oshkosh WI. Other hobbies include woodturning, sailing, canoeing, black powder cannon and jewelry making. What constitutes "good, hard SF" includes solid engineering principles based on hard scientific fact, extended in a linear manner into the near future. First contact interaction and interspecies communication are emphasized. Philosophically, hard SF should teach new concepts. "Good SF" should be uplifting, positive; Bujold has shown SF can also be romantic in her "A Civil Campaign". Although they can be entertaining, magic and fantasy have no place in hard SF; they demonstrably don’t "work"!
