Tony Caldwell was an expert on Shakespeare and early British drama and had taught at UNH for 19 years. Well known in the New Hampshire seacoast area, Caldwell had worked with Theater By the Sea and was involved in music and religious activities. Borne June 14, 1930, Dr. Caldwell received his A.B. degree from Columbia College in 1952, his M.A. from Columbia University in 1953, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1968. He was appointed to the UNH faculty in 1957. While at UNH, he was known among faculty members as the major proponent of humanities studies and received the Danforth Teachers Grant for 1966-1967 for continuing to develop a humanities curriculum. Samuel Anthony Caldwell III died June 28, 1977 in a car accident in Scotland.
