Alec Clayton was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and grew up there and in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. His writing career began in New York City, where he edited a weekly newspaper from 1974 to 1977. In the summer of 1977 (the summer when fellow Tupelo native Elvis Presley died), Alec and his wife, Gabi, moved back to Hattiesburg where they published Mississippi Arts & Letters. They moved to Olympia, Washington in 1988. Alec has since been an editor and writer for periodicals including The News Tribune and the Weekly Volcano in Tacoma, Washington, and Oly Arts in Olympia. The Claytons continue to live in Olympia and are the founders of Mud Flat Press.
