Lucia Porter and Harry Cavanagh are an unlikely couple. She has suffered from a sheltered and controlled upbringing, he is the heir to a fortune and a title. They meet at university, and after a whirlwind romance marry. But the Harry that Lucia marries turns out to be different from the Harry she fell in love with. Matters come to a head with the sudden death of their newborn son, which brings Lucia to the verge of a breakdown.

Unknown to Harry, she travels to a retreat on a remote Scottish island, where she hopes to find help managing her grief. There she meets four other women who have all had experiences similar to hers. The retreat is led by the mysterious Dr Crowley, whose unconventional methods focus on the ancient, mystical attributes of the island.

Lucia falls under his spell and is taken to realms far beyond her understanding, as strange forces draw her into a changed life.
