Note to parents:

The author (a retired schoolteacher) has deliberately used some ’grown up words’, which will be unfamiliar to very young children. The idea is that by hearing the parent or older reader saying the words out loud in the poetic rhythm of the story, they will gain an intuitive understanding and enjoyment of the English language in action.

The child’s vocabulary will grow from their love of language. Time spent reading aloud to children is time well spent and will get them off to a great start when the time comes for more formal learning.
