Dr. T. C. Chau received his doctoral degree in mathematics from the Australian National University in 1969. He taught in the mathematics department of Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, for 27 years. He also taught in York University, Monash University and the University of Western Australia among others. He has more than 40 years of experience in tutoring the college calculus.
This tutorial is intended to be a preparatory text for high school students and university freshmen who will be taking a first course in calculus, and also for people who do it by themselves. It is recommended that they spend 3-4 weeks studying the materials in this book before doing their first calculus courses.
Based on long years of lecturing and tutoring, the author strongly believes that doing so would substantially enhance the chances of success, that the materials are within the grasp of students with a less than grade 12 mathematics background, and that they form a useful basis for further developments.
