Hikers toiling up the stony lane would stop for a breather and gaze enviously at the big house and the busy farm next door. They’d try to imagine that rural idyll, living on a Lakeland hill in carefree abandon, miles from anywhere.

But within the close confines of that isolated retreat lurk jealousy and suspicion.
