Does Mathematical Study Develop Logical Thinking?: Testing the Theory of Formal Discipline

Inglis and Attridge test the hypothesis that studying mathematics in high school prepares people for logical thinking throughout their life--called the Theory of Formal Discipline. After setting out the Theory, its history, and its influence in setting contemporary education policy, they discuss investigating the Theory of Formal Discipline, cross-sectional differences in reasoning behavior, longitudinal development in conditional reasoning, the modus tollens inference and mathematics, conditional inference across the mathematical lifespan, and why studying advanced mathematics would develop conditional reasoning.
