Cicero: Republic

This new edition of De re publica provides a revised Latin text and a new English translation of all the surviving text of Cicero’s famous work on Roman constitutional theory, as well as the testimonia relating to the production and reception of the work. Latin text and English translation are accompanied by a detailed introduction and commentary, exploring linguistic and stylistic features, questions of literary genre, the historical background and the philosophical context. This material enables a new appreciation of De re publica, an influential work in the history of political thought and important for a better understanding of the historical situation at the end of the Roman Republic and of Cicero’s development as a writer and politician.
