Native, Non-Native Hedges, Borders, Hedgerows, Lawns and Carpet Beds captures the balance of major horticultural topics the author aspired to cover through collective publications. Following a visit to a South Carolina arboretum in the 1990s, with educational resources on site, the author was inspired to develop such an arboretum on Prince Edward Island. In doing so, hardiness trials of plant species, hybrids and cultivars from around the world were established. Tours and educational sessions for the disabled and other interested individuals and groups are provided.
The author has since moved forward to perpetually protect the property under a Demonstration Habitat Protection Agreement pursuant to the Wildlife Conservation Act R.S. P.E.I. 1988, Cap. W-4. 1. Following this designation, the property will be donated to a local charitable organization in perpetuity as an educational resource for industry, organizations and public.
The first edition of Native, Non-Native Hedges, Borders, Hedgerows, Lawns and Carpet Beds highlights a collaboration of cultural information and imagery seen across the Island and northern Nova Scotia. Images for each species or hybrids may include examples of form in-leaf, fall colour and winter form.
