Madness at El Cortijo is a mystery in which the central character, Harry Philips, finds himself psychologically challenged by a mysterious situation. His first night on his friends’ farm in Andalusia is alarming when a young girl who died in mysterious circumstances in 1905 visits him. His search for truth takes him on an adventure into turmoil and uncertainty. His investigations take him to the Iberian fin-de-siècle, the Spanish-American war in 1897 in Cuba, and back to the farm.
Harry is pulled from his depression by a compulsive need to understand the lives of a Spanish family who, like himself, had also suffered love and loss, except that their lives ended over one hundred years earlier in the place where he now finds himself.
Helped by Maria, who runs a local history group in Estepona, Harry is forced to confront his understanding of existence when his experience challenges his scientific competence. He considers the possibility of finding himself in a parallel universe. How else can he talk with Marcella?
