Kharkov/Kharkiv: A Borderland Capital

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city located on the Ukrainian-Russian historical borderland, has often been overlooked given its historic role. Kharkov/Kharkov for the first time uncovers the city’s long history, from the 17th century to today, and its process of becoming a borderland and undergoing regional reconfiguration, modernization and development of national mythologies.

Volodymyr Kravchenko is Professor in the Department of History, Classics and Religion at the University of Alberta and Director of the Contemporary Ukraine Studies Program at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian studies (CIUS) at the University of Alberta. He is the author of more than 180 publications on modern history and historiography of Ukraine.
