Alex Dudok de Wit is a freelance critic specialising in animation. He is the UK correspondent for Cartoon Brew and an in-house writer at Short of the Week. Since winning the BFI’s Young Journalist Competition in 2010, he has contributed regular reviews and features to Sight & Sound. His writing has also appeared in The Telegraph, The i, The Independent, Time Out, City A.M., Index on Censorship, and elsewhere, including specialist animation publications like Skwigly and ASIFA Magazine. He has served on the jury at Encounters Festival.
As a member of Art Translators Collective, Dudok de Wit regularly translates art criticism and essays from Japanese. His clients include the renowned anime scholar Joon Yang Kim. Dudok de Wit studied Japanese at the University of Oxford. He met Takahata on several occasions, and spent a weekend travelling with him around the Goshikinuma region.
