The Acquisition of L2 Phonology

Researchers and practitioners, applied linguists, and teachers, most of them Polish but representing five nationalities, share their experience and insights into acquiring the phonological system of a second language. Covering in turn phonetic analysis, phonological analysis, and pedagogical perspectives, they explore such topics as phonetic negative transfer from Chinese to English, the perception of the English voice onset time continuum by Polish learners, a cross-linguistic perspective on the role of phonological awareness in beginning reading, and insights from diary data on the successes and failures of students in learning foreign language pronunciation.
