Manly P Hall was a phenomenon. Astonishingly precocious, aged just 27 he produced the astoundingly comprehensive Secret Teachings of All Ages, a compendium of Esoteric Knowledge that would have been impressive in an author twice his age. He also wrote authoritatively on masonic mysteries decades before being officially initiated into the secrets of that august society. When he died, aged 89, he had authored over 150 books on spirituality and esoteric philosophy.
In Melchizedek and the Meaning of Fire, Hall details the central place of this element to all ancient religions, from Zoroastrianism and druidism to alchemy and Mystical Christianity, and its equal importance to present-day spirituality. This ’fire’ is not merely an allegorical device or symbol, but a living element that can vivify and spiritualise many organs in our body: liver, spleen, heart and most importantly our spinal centres and ’inner eye’ of the brain, leading to that overwhelming experience known by many names: satori, samadhi, enlightenment.
A book to revisit often - and to think about more. Essential reading for all interested in spiritual development.
