This book describes the science behind the workings of the body, mind, and life around us in a way that is hopefully easily readable for everyone. It is written as a series of ’Essays’ where each Essay is about one specific scientific topic, in a way that hopefully will enlighten the reader about complex issues and behaviour in a simple, easy to understand manner. The Essays are linked with explanatory text and are divided into sections of similar topics of interest. The book can be read from beginning to end, or by section, or if the reader wishes, by individual Essay in no particular order, other than that of what interests the reader. Thirty years of being a scientist made me aware that life and its control process have a rhythm and structure underpinning all activity, which takes time to be seen and understood, and there is a beauty to these rhythms and structures similar to that of great poetry, which I have tried to put into words in each of these Essays. I hope that the reader will find some understanding of how beautiful the poetry of life is, with its’ extraordinary complexity yet also perfect simplicity of design, from reading them.
