Charlie is a boy who loves reading stories of courage and adventure, when one spring morning a chance encounter with a Spitfire leads him on a magical adventure of his own, back across the thin veils of time, to meet his great-grandfather, a man with the strange name of Jam-Jar, a man he has only ever seen in photographs, who takes him on an exciting journey through the events of the Second World War.
Together, they travel from the devastation of the beaches of Dunkirk, to the bravery of the Battle of Britain, to London and the terror of the Blitz and by glorious steam train to the Arctic Convoys, sailing on cold and dangerous seas, until finding themselves in Malta, where they witness the island’s sacrifices to ensure ultimate success at El Alamein. The climax of their journey - the tumultuous beaches of D-Day itself.
Even when Charlie sees ’that Man’ - Hitler, he is not alone, but who is the mythical warrior with the shining sword, who appears before him?
And the greatest magic of all?
Charlie actually flies a SPITFIRE!
How does he do this and how does he escape a battle with a German ME109?
With his great-grandfather by his side and the beautiful Spitfire to lead the way, can Charlie find his way home?
Charlie and the Spitfire is an exhilarating adventure through the events of the Second World War, for children and adults alike and for anyone, who loves Spitfires!
