When he was seventeen, Father Gideon Gray lost his best friend in a horrific act of violence. He has spent the majority of his adult life in penance, haunted by that moment and the guilt he carries.

He lives his life in service to others, denying himself some of the most basic comforts of life. Sex, companionship ... love. He is resigned to his hollow role as small town priest in a small-town parish. Toeing the line, following the rules, nursing his grief.
