After a furious storm hits one night, two young brothers awaken to a glorious scene the following morning. Enthralled with all the snow that fell, they can’t wait to venture outdoors and enjoy the fun just waiting for them. Walking the trail in the nearby woods, however, they soon find an unexpected adventure that brings a lot of worry to their young hearts. When they meet their neighbor, a crotchety old man, he doesn’t waste words, pointing his long boney finger, and warning them of the sundogs. Not understanding the meaning, Ward and Lee Johnson turn back, screaming in their fright. Arms flailing as they negotiate the trail back home and across the field, they don’t stop until they reach the safety of their yard again.
Their mother immediately senses that something happened, and when Ward, the elder brother, tells the story, she is amused, assuring them that they had nothing to fear. When they have removed their winter clothing and boots, she shows them the sundogs through an unusual avenue - their living room window. Learning the truth behind their neighbor’s words, elder brother, Ward, realizes how old Mr. Crumble had fooled them. Ward wants to get back at him, but his mother dissuades him by telling Ward she’ll bake Mr. Crumble a pie. Ward’s shocked until he realizes the wisdom of his mother’s words.
The boys focus their hearts to the joy of the spring, looking forward to the pleasures awaiting in the days ahead. Thoroughly contented, here, The Sundog Snow Adventure loses its hold forever as the silent sundogs disappear high up in the sky!
