Most of these stories were written by Fred Hansen, who grew up in Hecla, South Dakota, and became a veterinarian like his uncle. Fred wrote about a time long disappeared just for the joy of telling a good story. For decades they were filed and forgotten in family papers. In his first paragraph Fred writes that he hoped someday a granddaughter would hear these stories and say, ＂That old grandpa you told about was pretty lucky.
