Meg Preston, a working-class woman in Belfast in the early 20th century, struggles with accepting her sexuality and longs for an unattainable relationship.

Meg pursues a relationship with Lillian Watson, a friend from her youth, despite the restrictions and norms of the time. War, bloodshed, and emigration woes, however, soon threaten to upend everything.
