Hellenistic Monarchies in the Mediterranean World: Building a New World Order?

The contributions to this volume represent a range of case studies that provide perspectives on the question of how deeply Hellenic influence penetrated into the lives of the subjects of the Hellenistic monarchies. Greek became the language of international discourse of the ruling elites in the kingdoms formed after the conquests of Alexander. But to what extent were the institutions and practices of these monarchies shaped by ideologies brought by Greek-speaking rulers? To what extent did the customs of the complex cultures they ruled over shape the practices of the ruling elites, conserving ancient institutions in traditional ways?

Dr. Mark Munn is Professor of Ancient Greek History and Archaeology at the Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Andrew Erskine is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Edinburgh.

Dr. Sabine Müller is Professor of Ancient History at the History Department of Marburg University.

Dr. Sebastian Scharff holds a postdoctoral ERC-funded research fellowship in the Department of Humanities at the University of Trento.

Dr. Sylvana Katsaounou is an Archaeologist at the Ephorate of Antiquities of Preveza, Greece.

Dr. Salvatore Vacante is an independent scholar and former Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute in Munich.

Dr. Jeremy LaBuff is Associate Professor of Ancient Mediterranean History at Northern Arizona University.

Dr. Timothy Howe is Professor of History at St. Olaf College.

Dr. Gilles Gorre is Professor of Greek History at the University of Caen, Normandy, France.

Dr. Patrick Sänger is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Münster.

Dr. Jennifer Carrington is an independent scholar holding a PhD in Classical Archaeology from the Department of Classics at Cornell University.

Dr. Joseph Manning is a professor of History and holds the William K. and Marilyn M. Simpson Chair in History and in Classics at Yale University.
