About the Author
Rudyard Kipling is one of Britain’s best-loved authors. Kipling was born in Bombay, in British India, in 1865. His father was an arts and crafts teacher at the Jeejeebhoy School of Art. Kipling was brought up by an ayah, and Hindustani was his first language.
His parents brought him to England when he was six and he lived in a foster home for five years.
After school Kipling returned to India in 1882 and worked as a journalist. He started writing short stories and poetry and his work was very popular in England where he was called ‘ the new Charles Dickens’.
Kipling married and had three children. His children featured in his work and the death of two of them, Josephine and Jack, had a great affect on him.
He was the youngest author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature when he received the award in 1907. Kipling’s most famous works include The Jungle Book, Kim and the Just-So Stories. His poem ‘If’, was voted Britain’s favourite poem.
Kipling died in 1936 and he is buried in Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey in London.
