Occlusion by itself is complex yet an interesting and a vast concept in dentistry. Knowing the concepts of occlusion thoroughly becomes important to dentists in the diagnosis and correct treatment planning. On the other hand, it becomes crucial to deliver a prosthesis that is in harmony with the stomatognathic system and is not interfering in function. Conventionally, qualitative assessment methods such as occlusal registration strips, occlusal indicator waxes, shim stock foils, articulating papers, articulating silk, articulating film, high spot indicator used. These qualitative methods have certain drawbacks like inability to map forces, detect forces or report forces. Also the timing of contacts cannot be detected. This can lead to grinding of those teeth which actually did not require correction. But now with the advent of quantitative methods like photo occlusion system, T-Scan, Occlusense, one can overcome the mentioned drawbacks, thus leading to comparatively accurate and quantitative assessment of occlusion. This capacity of these recent methods can therefore provide a good diagnosis, smart treatment plan and good prognosis and thus overall enhancing the comfort of patient.
