Over the last decade, many circumstances have favoured the trend towards motorcycle use. Since then, the increase in the number of motorcycles has been so great that it has changed the Brazilian traffic landscape. As a result, the number of traffic deaths has also grown and reached even higher levels, becoming a serious social and public health problem. Thus, this study aimed to analyse the characteristics of fatal accidents involving motorcyclists in Belo Horizonte in 2012 and 2013, as well as to identify their profile based mainly on data from the Vida No Trânsito (Life in Traffic) Programme. This study also pointed out some risky behaviours that contribute to traffic fatalities and measures that can help raise awareness and reduce the mortality of motorcyclists in traffic.
