As a foreigner who has found a second home in the Philippines, I am honoured to share my experience as a doctor practicing in the remote barrios of Nueva Ecija. My name is Dr. Utipmfon Sukmama Jimmy, and my journey to become a rural healthcare physician has been both tough and gratifying.
Growing up, I hoped to become a doctor and help those in need. Little did I know that this ambition would lead me to the Philippines’ gorgeous scenery and kind communities. In this book, I hope to shed light on the particular challenges and benefits of rural healthcare. From my early ambitions to the daily realities of living as a rural doctor, I wish to bring insight into the world of healthcare in rural areas. My journey has been one of joy, grief, and tremendous growth. I’ve learnt significant lessons about the value of trust, overcoming obstacles, and making a difference in the lives of others. This book is dedicated to all rural healthcare workers who work persistently to promote the health and well-being of their communities. May our tales encourage others to join us in our aim to provide high-quality healthcare to everyone, regardless of geography or background.
